DAS Photonics, the Valencia-based EM&E Group company specializing in photonic technologies for the space, aerospace, and defense sectors, has reached a major European milestone by successfully completing the qualification of a key technology developed for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) QKDSat mission. This marks the qualification of the most advanced European photon source for a satellite-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system, reinforcing Europe’s technological autonomy in this strategic field while helping safeguard the most sensitive communications against the emerging threats posed by future quantum computing.
The company has successfully qualified the Faint Pulse Source (FPS), an optical subsystem designed to generate light (photons) required to distribute encryption keys from space using quantum protocols. This type of communication harnesses the principles of quantum physics to secure information exchange against potential interception. Any attempt to access the data during transmission leaves a detectable trace, providing an unprecedented level of security.
The qualified equipment has already been delivered to Redwire Europe, the manufacturer of the QKDSat satellite, for full system integration and testing. It successfully completed an extensive campaign of functional and environmental tests at ESA’s ESA-VSC laboratory in Valencia, demonstrating its performance and reliability under the extreme conditions of space.
This achievement places DAS Photonics at the forefront of European space-based quantum communications, as the company’s technology represents the most technologically mature and qualified Faint Pulse Source with integrated security functions developed in Europe for satellite QKD systems.

Secure Communications from Space
QKDSat is Europe’s first initiative aimed at developing an operational and commercial secured satellite system for Quantum Key Distribution. The project consortium includes two industrial partners—British Telecom (BT) and Colt Technology Services—which are helping define the future operational services for secure quantum communications.
The QKDSat mission will enable the secure exchange of cryptographic keys based on the fundamental principles of quantum physics, overcoming the distance limitations of terrestrial fiber-optic networks and supporting the development of resilient, sovereign, and secure communications for governments, critical infrastructure operators, and commercial users.
