GDMA (Dual Guidance System for Airborne Munition)

R&D project subsidized by the CDTI and supported by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, aimed at researching and validating a national technological solution for high-precision airborne guided munition. Its focus is to improve operational capabilities through dual guidance (midcourse guidance based on navigation and terminal laser guidance), and to reinforce strategic autonomy through the design and validation of critical components, algorithms, and advanced electronic systems. The project includes demonstrators and tests at a relevant scale to advance the technology toward higher technological readiness levels.

Project details

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The general objective of GDMA is to research a national technological solution for high-precision airborne guided munition. This includes the capability of providing midcourse and terminal guidance (SAL laser) through the design and validation of critical subsystems, materials, algorithms, and advanced electronic systems, reaching optimal technological readiness levels.

QUALITATIVE LEAP

  • Optimize system capabilities according to current operational needs, integrating midcourse guidance via GNSS navigation with a SAL terminal seeker or alternative technologies.
  • Scale the concept toward the development of a versatile family of airborne munitions.
  • Foster strategic autonomy through the national development of critical components, guaranteeing supply chain resilience in the face of potential conflict scenarios.
TECHNICAL SCOPE

  • Modular architecture: configuration based on a munition body integrated with a guidance kit, consisting of a smart front section and a rear stabilization section.
  • Advanced aeroballistic analysis: focus on aerodynamic characterization, interference studies, safe separation, and trajectory optimization.
  • Guidance intelligence: development of advanced navigation algorithms, sensor hybridization and fusion, as well as failure mode detection protocols.
  • Experimental validation: execution of tests with scale demonstrators to collect the necessary data to evolve the design toward higher technological readiness levels.
